Appearance: At times, Remus looks more aged and exhausted than he actually is; particularly close to the full moon, and especially after it. There is nothing particularly striking about his appearance. His hair is tawny and streaked with premature gray. Since his days at Hogwarts, he's filled into his gangly limbs, but still remains rather thin-looking, and has yet to develop anything resembling an intimidating stature (besides his form as a werewolf, that is). He has pale skin mapped by scars - most faint and faded from time. The moth-eaten robes he occasionally wears, frayed at the seams and fruitlessly patched by fabric squares a shade too light or too dark, make it crystal clear that Remus' finances don't allow for many luxuries. It's a rare sight to behold him in an article of clothing that isn't shabby in some way or another. Habits: When Remus is on the brink of losing his temper, he'll close his eyes and think of all the Greek gods and goddesses he knows. He also has the habit of smiling even when there is nothing to smile about. Tea and chocolate tend to be his answer to everything wrong with the world. Personality: Remus has a calm but strong presence. Underneath his wearied, unassuming appearance is a man who is more shrewd and good-humored than looks would tell. He has suffered and lost much in his life, but he won't let his hardships burden another's shoulders or weigh himself down to a stop. He's optimistic and he tries to see the good in everyone first before leaping to conclusions. He's a patient and understanding man, and it takes something considerable to set him off. Though he has never been quick to trust and confide in others, his non-threatening demeanor makes him easy to like and confide in. Remus is a people pleaser. He's wont to make subconscious efforts to stay in peoples' good graces, especially his friends'. Although he's become better at putting his foot down when he deems it necessary -- or at least vocalising his disapproval -- there are times when Remus makes allowances to avoid a conflict or being disliked against his otherwise better judgment. BACKGROUND Remus Lupin was born and raised in a modest but comfortable cottage in Wakefield by Mabel and John Lupin, two half-bloods. While Mabel worked in the local library, John worked as a freelance journalist following unusual or unconventional stories. When Remus was seven years-old, his father pursued a story that would cost him dearly. John thought he could get the story on Fenrir Greyback that no other journalist could get, and Remus bore the brunt of his father's mistake. Before his parents could drive the werewolf away, Remus was bitten. His shoulder was torn all the way to his back, but Remus lived. The worst of his parents' fears were confirmed when the next full moon arrived and Remus transformed. His parents tried to find a cure for their son. They exhausted their resources traveling to multiple Wizarding clinics, but the answer they received were all the same: there was no cure. They were forced to accept that there was none, and that they alone had to help Remus cope with the curse he was to bear for life. It wasn't easy for the Lupin family, a family of very modest means, but they managed to make ends meet. They moved around the country, keeping their son safe and their son's secret safe. The summer day that an owl arrived bearing Hogwart's seal and Remus' name seemed to be Fate's respite at long last for the Lupins. Albus Dumbledore knew Remus Lupin's condition and saw no reason why the young wizard shouldn't be allowed to learn how to wield his magical ability like every other witch and wizard. Remus was overjoyed, but he was also overwhelmed with terror. Everyone save his mother and father had turned their backs on him. He was afraid of more rejection, afraid of anyone else knowing what he was, but above all, Remus was afraid of hurting someone else. When Dumbledore paid the Lupin residence a personal visit and told them of the adjustments and precautions that would be made, Remus consented to attend but never put his fears to rest. The rest is history. The Marauders found each other aboard the Hogwarts Express on their very first ride, and stuck together all through their seven years at Hogwarts. They made trouble, they made the Marauders Map, they made Severus Snape's life miserable, and they made Remus Lupin feel comfortable with what he was for the first time in his life. His days at Hogwarts were, without a shadow of doubt, the best days of his life. The First War ended this happy era. Just a bare year after Remus left Hogwarts, he joined the Order of the Phoenix when times became dark. He joined as an optimistic and idealistic young man, and when Voldemort fell because of Harry Potter, Remus felt more old and frustrated with life than ever before. He'd lost his parents and all his friends. Lily, James, Peter, and Sirius. They were all dead. James and Lily left him some money to take care of himself, but Remus refused to touch it until he ran out of all other options. He spent the next ten years of his life wandering around the world from job to odd job, never settling in one place for too long. This time helped Remus not only grieve and continue on with life, but acquire knowledge and experience. When Albus Dumbledore contacted him again, offering him the DADA position, Remus felt prepared to return and take the job. With Sirius on the loose, he felt he owed it to James and Lily to be at Hogwarts to look after their son. The events of that year turned Remus' world upside-down. He found out the truth about Peter and Sirius, Severus Snape outed the truth about his condition, and Remus resigned from his position and moved in with Sirius at 12 Grimmauld Place. He lived there until Sirius was killed by his cousin. In the Second War, Dumbledore asked Remus to join Fenrir Greyback's pack in order to know what Voldemort was using his 'pets' for. He had known little about the werewolf who bit him until he joined his pack, but any notions Remus once held about the man being deserving of sympathy were quickly amended. Winning the pack's trust and living as one of the pack was harsh and exhausting. When Nymphadora Tonks made her feelings known to Remus and Molly Weasley began to drop hints of encouragement, Remus was thrown. Nymphadora was young, vivacious, and beautiful. He couldn't understand what she saw in him: a poor, old werewolf. After Dumbledore was killed, Remus caved and decided to give a relationship a chance with Nymphadora despite his reservations. He wanted to be loved, to be what Nymphadora wanted him to be, and he wanted to love Nymphadora. But it wasn't enough to want. When Nymphadora became pregnant, they married in a private ceremony but their relationship steadily grew worse once she went into hiding to protect herself and their child. Remus realized no matter how much he wanted to fall in love with Nymphadora, he couldn't love her the way she wanted him to. They fought until they could no longer pretend it would all work out eventually and privately divorced before Teddy was born. When he wasn't checking in on Nymphadora, Remus was moving from place to place, keeping the Resistance informed through Potterwatch. Recent Past: In the Final Battle, Remus got the Killing Curse meant for Nymphadora. His condition saved him from death, but not from being hospitalized in St. Mungo's.
